Sunday's Hymn: Savior, Thy Dying Love

Saviour, thy dying love
Thou gavest me,
Nor should I aught withhold,
Dear Lord, from thee:
In love my soul would bow,
My heart fulfil its vow,
Some off’ring bring thee now,
Something for thee.

O’er the blest mercy-seat,
Pleading for me,
Upward in faith I look,
Jesus, to thee:
Help me the cross to bear,
Thy wondrous love declare,
Some song to raise, or prayer,
Something for thee.

Give me a faithful heart,
Guided by thee,
That each departing day
Henceforth may see
Some work of love begun,
Some deed of kindness done,
Some wand’rer sought and won,
Something for thee.

All that I am and have—
Thy gifts so free—
Ever in joy or grief,
My Lord, for thee;
And when thy face I see,
My ransomed soul shall be,
Through all eternity,
Offered to thee.

Sunday's Hymn: From Ev'ry Stormy Wind That Blows

From ev’ry stormy wind that blows,
From ev’ry swelling tide of woes,
There is a calm, a sure retreat,
‘Tis found beneath the mercy-seat.

There is a place where Jesus sheds
The oil of gladness on our heads,
A place than all besides more sweet;
It is the blood-stained mercy-seat.

There is a spot where spirits blend,
Where friend holds fellowship with friend,
Tho’ sundered far; by faith they meet
Around the common mercy-seat.

Ah, whither could we flee for aid,
When tempted, desolate, dismayed,
Or how the hosts of hell defeat,
Had suff’ring saints no mercy-seat?

There, there on eagle wings we soar,
And time and sense seem all no more,
And heav’n comes down our souls to greet,
And glory crowns the mercy-seat.

O may my hand forget her skill,
My tongue be silent, cold, and still,
This bounding heart forget to beat,
If I forget the mercy-seat.

Selected Reading

I read (or watched or heard) these recently and recommend them to you.

Atonement

No Holy Spirit, No Penal Sustitutionary Atonement
What was the Holy Spirit’s role in a penal substitutionary atonement?

Christian History

Hrotsvit of Gandersheim and Her Christian Plays
There are so many fascinating women in Christian history. This one wrote plays—plays that sound just a little weird to me. What do you think?

Writing

Let’s Talk About Plagiarism
If you do any writing at all, you should read this. Best tip?

Always revise. Any author carefully going over every sentence in their piece—seeking for ways to improve diction, sentence structure, clarity, and flow—is unlikely to have chunks of others’ work remaining in it.

Mystery

Death at the South Pole: The Mystery of Antartica’s Unsolved Poisoning Case
Accident? Suicide? Murder? No one know for sure—except the murderer, I guess, and that’s only if it was a murder.

Food

Slow Cooker Whole Chicken
I’m probably late to the party, but I didn’t know it was possible to cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker and have it turn out like a real roast chicken. I’ve used this recipe twice now, and I was pleased with the results both times. The best part is all the chicken drippings left in the bottom of the pot to use for to gravy.
