Round the Sphere

From some ladies you should be reading.

Members of An Exotic Species
right in your own home, and you might want to consider sharing them with others.

Right in the middle of the foyer area, the kids spotted a fish tank with exotic-looking luminous yellow tropical fish and ran to look. Their eyes were wide with excitement as they gazed at the tank describing what they could see in excited voices.

Then behind me, I heard another excited voice. One of the elderly ladies this time.

Leslie has a question. Can you help her out?

Well, that initial question has budded since Friday; I now have a hydra of questions creating more questions. I’ve learned that there is controversy surrounding this issue, so it’s possible that I won’t reach a definitive answer.

Not Really the Gospel, Is It?
Examining the speaker’s message.

She is a published author and skilled communicator. She has endured with resilience and grace what many would describe as an unfair twist of fate. Her testimony in the Lord’s faithfulness to deliver her not from but through her tragedy is both inspiring and challenging.

However, I listened to her speak with a mixture of unease and dread gnawing at my stomach.

Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy 11

What do Christians mean when they say the Bible is inerrant? The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy tells us what leading inerrantist mean by inerrancy. I’ll be posting a section of this statement each week until I’ve posted the whole thing.

You can read previously posted sections of this statement in by clicking here. After a preface and a short statement, the Chicago Statement contains a section called Articles of Affirmation and Denial.

Article IX.

We affirm that inspiration, though not conferring omniscience, guaranteed true and trustworthy utterance on all matters of which the Biblical authors were moved to speak and write.

We deny that the finitude or fallenness of these writers, by necessity or otherwise, introduced distortion or falsehood into God’s Word.

Book Review: Be Still, My Soul

Embracing God’s Purpose & Provision in Suffering: 25 Classic & Contemporary Readings on the Problem of Pain edited by Nancy Guthrie.

If you’ve lived long enough, you know that very few, if any, escape suffering somewhere along the line. When those trials come, we need a rock solid ground beneath us. This secure stability in difficulty is what Nancy Guthrie hopes to guide us to in Be Still, My Soul. She writes:

The scriptural truths elucidated in this book by respected classic and contemporary theologians and Bible teachers are the truths that have been the solid foundation under my feet in the storms of suffering and sorrow in my life.

This book follows the same formula as Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus, the Nancy Guthrie collection of Christmas readings that I reviewed a year and a half ago. Only this time the topic is not the incarnation but God’s perspective, purpose, and provision in suffering. Nancy Guthrie, who lost two of her children as infants and who has written books on  the subject of God and suffering is uniquely equipped to compile selections that will give the reader courage, hope, and peace in suffering.
