Round the Sphere Again

A working edition.

Lost Jobs
Here’s a gallery of endangered or extinct professions, like lector, for instance, and switchboard operator—a job I used to have, but wasn’t much good at. (I’d say stenographers are obsolete, too, and it’s a good thing. Those girls are dangerous—see below.)

Workplace Hazard
Ah, the story the stone tells. Poor young George Millet died “evading 6 young women trying to give him birthday kisses” in the office where he worked. You’ll find even more details of this sad bit of history in a pdf of an article from the New York Times.

Sunday's Hymn

Gustave Dore, The Vision of EzekielBreathe on Me, Breath of God

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Blend all my soul with Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

—Edwin Hatch
