Sunday's Hymn: Before Jehovah's Awful Throne

Before Jehovah’s awful throne,
Ye nations, bow with sacred joy:
Know that the Lord is God alone,
He can create, and he destroy.

His sovereign pow’r, without our aid,
Made us of dust, and formed us men;
And when like wandering sheep we strayed,
He brought us to his fold again.

We are his people, we his care,
Our souls, and all our mortal frame;
What lasting honors shall we rear,
Almighty Maker, to my name?

We’ll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heavens our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love;
Firm as a rock thy truth must stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

—Isaac Watts

This hymn seems to be more popular among Seventh-day Adventists than anyone else, at least if you’re counting You-Tube videos of it. But I’ve found two performances that aren’t, as far as I know, associated with SDA groups. The first is a youth orchestra with congregation and choir, and the second is done by a Mennonite chorale.

Other hymns, worship songs, sermons etc. posted today:

Have you posted a hymn (or sermon, sermon notes, prayer, etc.) today and I missed it? Let me know by leaving a link in the comments or by contacting me using the contact form linked above, and I’ll add your post to the list.

It All Started With Adam

I’m at out Out of the Ordinary today, writing about how we all became sinners.

The Bible tells us that it started with Adam, from whom we’ve descended… . Everything was perfect [in the Garden of Eden until … Adam and Eve listened to the serpent in the Garden of Eden and rebelled against the one prohibition God gave them.

It’s another post on things every Christian woman should know. Here are the previous posts in this series.

Linked Together: People You Should Know

Isaac Watts
May must be Isaac Watts Month at Ligonier Ministries Blog. Through the end of May — only a few days away, so you’ll need to hurry — you can download an eBook edition of Douglas Bond’s The Poetic Wonder of Isaac Watts. (Isaac Watts is the poet who wrote the words to When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, which is, according to me, the best English language hymn ever written.)

You can also read a few posted excerpts from this book.

Lady Jane Grey
I’ve linked to a couple of things on the life of Lady Jane Grey previously. Now, Aimee Byrd quotes from her letters to Heinrich Bullinger and says the are “a great example of appropriate Christian friendship.”
