Catching Up
With Sherry’s Top 100 Hymn Project.
- What Wondrous Love Is This (65)
- To God Be the Glory (64)
- I’ll Fly Away (63). This is the first of the hymns to make the list for which I can’t see the reasoning behind it’s popularity. I would never in a million years vote for it. If you’re an “I’ll Fly Away” fan, forgive me for insulting your song.
- Take My Life and Let It Be (62)
- Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting (61) Yet another one of my favorites makes the list. So I’m up to 3/10.
- Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (60). Sherry gives some interesting background to this Charles Wesley hymn.

I just had to look up the song, "I'll Fly Away", after reading your comment. Listened to the Alan Jackson version linked on her post and had to smile. I understand why you may question it being on the list. However, I really like it - it makes me smile and brings tears to my eyes at the same time. I like it for a number of reasons - It's fun to harmonize with it, it's a happy song that makes my toes tap, and causes me think of heaven. Not a whole lot of doctrine in it, that's for sure! It's one of those songs that needs to be sung with a lot of others surrounding it, like a spot of play in the middle of studying.
We sing very few hymns here, mostly the newer choruses. I really miss hymns. When I read the titles to each of them in this post, the words and music were instantly in my mind. Lots of memories, too, of Sunday evening song services when I was a kid. I loved those!
