Heidelberg Catechism

Question 15. What sort of a mediator and deliverer, then, must we look for?

Answer: For one who is true man, and perfectly (a) righteous; (b) and yet more powerful than all creatures; that is, one who is also true God. (c)

  • a. 1 Corinthians 15:21

    For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

          Hebrews 2:17

    Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

  • b. Hebrews 7:26

    For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

          2 Corinthians 5:21

    For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

          Isaiah 53:9

    And they made his grave with the wicked

    and with a rich man in his death,

    although he had done no violence,

    and there was no deceit in his mouth.
