Your Favorite Hymn, Please
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 1:07PM
A couple of years ago, I asked people to tell me their favorite hymn and then those hymns were used as the Sunday’s Hymn until the favorites list ran out, which took several months, as I recall. I’d like to do that again, first of all, because it was a whole lot of fun, and secondly, because it saves me a whole lot of work.
In the next few weeks, youngest son will graduating, youngest daughter will be moving out, oldest daughter will be moving in, plus there are all the other more regular year-end activities to attend to, and if I’ve ever needed help keeping the blog going, it’s right now. So help me out here, okay? Tell me one of your loved hymns in the comments to this post, and I’ll feature it in one of my upcoming Sunday’s Hymn posts. While you’re at it, tell me a little bit about why you like the hymn you’ve chosen.
If you participated in my previous call for favorite hymns, please participate in this one, too. If you like more than one hymn, give me another of your favorites, but if you are one of those one-hymn wonders (and I know a couple of those in real life) then I will allow you to nominate the same hymn again, although I might add you to my list of most boring people on the face of the earth at the same time.
If you have a blog, I’ll link back to you when I feature your hymn. If you don’t have a blog, consider this your chance to get some of the glory of blogging without any of the pain.

One that hasn't been mentioned but that is at the top of my personal list is The Church's One Foundation. I recently told my husband that if I was to get into a car accident or come to some other untimely death, that I wanted that hymn played at my funeral along with Handel's I Know that My Redeemer Liveth.
And Can It Be--I have sung this to my son since he was a baby, nursing him while I laid on the twin bed in his room before I laid him in his crib for the night. It reminds me of how astonished I should be about Grace.
"Died He for me, WHO CAUSED HIS PAIN..." One of my favorite quotations is by William Gurnall and it goes something like this (I posted it exactly on my blog a while back): "It would be strange if a child delighted to use the very knife with which his father was stabbed." This is how I can be with my sin, the sin that caused His pain, yet "died He for ME".
My son is now 4, and every single night before bed he asks me to sing "And Can It Be". He also asks to sing it in sunday school sometimes and to hear him sing it is precious (he's working on some of the words still!).
This is definitely one of my favourites - I searched for it and only one site had part of it so, assuming it to be not very well known, I have given the full words. Unfortunately the author isn't listed in the "Believers' Hymn Book" where I got it - it is sung to "Regent Square".
My Redeemer! Oh what beauties
in that lovely Name appear;
none but Jesus, in His glories,
shall the honoured title wear.
My Redeemer! My Redeemer!
Thou hast my salvation wrought.
Sunk in ruin, sin, and misery,
bound by Satan's captive chain,
guided by his artful treachery,
hurrying onto endless pain;
My Redeemer! My Redeemer!
plucked me as a brand from hell.
Mine by covenant, mine for ever,
mine by oath, and mine by blood,
mine - nor time the bond shall sever,
mine as an unchanging God.
My Redeemer! My Redeemer!
O how sweet to call thee mine.
When in Heaven I see Thy glory,
when before Thy throne I bow,
perfected I shall be like Thee,
fully Thy redemption know.
My Redeemer! My Redeemer!
then shall hear me shout His praise.

And Can It Be
Fairest Lord Jesus
That oughta keep things simple for you for a while!
