Your Favorite Hymn, Please

hymnbook.jpg

A couple of years ago, I asked people to tell me their favorite hymn and then those hymns were used as the Sunday’s Hymn until the favorites list ran out, which took several months, as I recall. I’d like to do that again, first of all, because it was a whole lot of fun, and secondly, because it saves me a whole lot of work.

In the next few weeks, youngest son will graduating, youngest daughter will be moving out, oldest daughter will be moving in, plus there are all the other more regular year-end activities to attend to, and if I’ve ever needed help keeping the blog going, it’s right now. So help me out here, okay? Tell me one of your loved hymns in the comments to this post, and I’ll feature it in one of my upcoming Sunday’s Hymn posts. While you’re at it, tell me a little bit about why you like the hymn you’ve chosen.

If you participated in my previous call for favorite hymns, please participate in this one, too. If you like more than one hymn, give me another of your favorites, but if you are one of those one-hymn wonders (and I know a couple of those in real life) then I will allow you to nominate the same hymn again, although I might add you to my list of most boring people on the face of the earth at the same time.

If you have a blog, I’ll link back to you when I feature your hymn. If you don’t have a blog, consider this your chance to get some of the glory of blogging without any of the pain.

    Response: Favorite Hymn
The blogger, Rebecca, is asking for people to list their favorite hymn so that she can use the list for upcoming postings. I happen to have a pile of songs I love and would be hard pressed to choose just one or two. But, here are a few that quickly come ...

...the time during which I was refining and solidifying my understanding of Reformed theology. I was still trying to reconcile the various "spiritual" experiences of my life and found that this hymn summed up my life AND my theology quite nicely!

I think I used this the last time you asked... "Be Thou My Vision" is my favourite.

A close second is "How Great Thou Art."

My favourite hymn, although I like many different ones, is "Like a River Glorious". I think I like it best because of the confidence it speaks of that we have in God.

Looking forward to seeing all the favourites.

Well, I have more than one favorite, but if I can only pick one, it's definitely Abide With Me. I'm going to go ahead and list When I Survey, and Holy Holy Holy as well.

I recall the last time you did this and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Its gotta be 'the Old Rugged Cross' - its just so errr, cross centred... (sorry)

Also 'A Mighty Fortress' - Truthfully though, I just love the tune to this one (not very spiritual I know)

Oh my, life is rich at your house right now. I'll ponder and come back soon with my choices...blessings on your whole household coming, going, etc. etc.

"A Mighty Fortress" by Martin Luther is my favorite hymn, among many favorites.

Delurking to let you know - mine is "Great is thy Faithfulness"
just because He is really! And also because "All I have needed His hand has provided" etc etc.

I must admit though I love all those already listed.

Hello! I just found you by doing some blog hopping this afternoon. I love to find other bloggers in the Arctic. My favorite is a Christmas one- Hark the Herald Angels Sing. I could sing that anytime of year!

Great site! Thank you!

Hi Kara,

Welcome to the blog. It's nice to have another northerner visit. When I feature your hymn, I've got a photo of the original of Hark the Herald Angels written in Charles Wesley's own hand that I'll post to go with it.

Two of my favorite classic hymns are Dorothy Gurney's "Perfect Love" and Thomas Ken's "Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun" (the latter is most famous for its very popular last stanza which is often sung alone under the name "Doxology".)

I like the last one, too, and think it's a pity we only know "the doxology."

I can't just pick one, I have two all time favourites:
"It Is Well With My Soul" because it IS well with my soul. This song is the first that I long to sing when life's circumstances are overwhelming and full of sorrows. It is a great reminder that we are never without hope!
And "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" because my secured hope is all the work of Jesus, these words from the song say it all, "Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor, Daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above."

Few songs can sum up deep Biblical truths like the old Hymns. I'm looking forward to the weekly features.

I agree with the one who said, "Like a River Glorious." That hymn helped me make it through college. Besides that, I love the Mennonite version of "Praise God from whom all Blessings Flow." I believe it's often refered to by its number in the hymnal. It's long and difficult to sing, but absolutely lovely in a church with good singers.

Well my first favorite (1.1) is Hallelujah, What a Savior (Man of Sorrows), my next favorite, (1.2) is I Sing the Mighty Power of God, and my next favorite (1.3) is anything by Frances Ridley Havergal ie. Take My Life and Let it Be, Consecrated Lord to Thee, Like a River Glorious, Who is on the Lord's Side?. So that's my multi-pointed favorite :)

Oh, and my heart has deeply resonated at certain plateaus and dips of my spiritual life with the final verse of Come Thou Fount that the earlier poster, Melanie, noted beginning with O to Grace how great a debtor... (Not that I've ever doubted that his goodness like a fetter would not bind my heart to him - Hallelujah, what a Savior!)

One of my favorites is "How Firm a Foundation."
