A. Y. Jackson Paints the Highway

Alaska Highway between Watson Lake and Nelson (1943 )

Kim of The Upward Call has featured artwork by two of The Group of Seven. Here is a painting another one of the seven, A. Y. Jackson.  It shows the Alaska Highway between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson, and it must be early spring, I’m guessing.

I remember it looking like that. I like the gentle colouration that looks like calcium spread on the dirt. Of course one can't recount this view without remebering the gallons of washer fluid and many extra spare tires. I remember riding in the back of the old Datsun, counting 11 spare tires in total, between the tent trailer and the car.

The need for tires reduced substantially when they started using magnets to collect the metal bits the graders left behind.

Your bang on with the early spring time line.

What memories.

I remember it looking just like that, too. Everyone and everything was filthy by the time you got off the highway.
